Haruhi is the protagonist of the well-known manga and TV series Ouran High School Host Club.
Canon
Ouran High
She is a scholarship student at Ouran High and is commonly mistaken for a boy. She doesn't really care about other people's opinions of her. She meets the host club accidentally wandering in while looking for a quiet place to study. She knocks over an expensive vase and is recruited by the club as a host to pay off her debt. They soon find out her gender but decide to let her stay a male host. She is the sweetheart of the club.
Family Life
Haruhi's father Ranka is a cross-dresser and very over protective of Haruhi. She lost her mother ten years prior to the series but still idolizes her. The reason that she worked so hard to get into Ouran is to become a lawyer like her mother. She is very independent which tends to strain her relationship with her father but its mostly because she knows that he works hard to support her so she doesn't want to inconvenience him.

Gender
Many fans view Haruhi as trans, nonbinary and/or genderqueer, and there is debate over whether this is canon, as Haruhi states that she does not really care how people see her (including the gender people perceive her as).
One FailFandom-Anon user explained why they felt Haruhi's narrative was a nonbinary one:
Haruhi passed for a boy even before her gender was "revealed" and said that she didn't mind the fact that she was assumed to be a boy. She also performs feminity in the host club when she's asked to, she's just assumed to be a boy dressed upa s a girl in those moments. That's far from a typical "female narrative" of a girl who diguises herself as male because of misogyny, despite secretely wishing to perform feminity.
