Haruhi is the protagonist of the well-known manga and TV series Ouran High School Host Club.

A scholarship student attending the prestigious Ouran Academy, Haruhi is lower middle class but is surrounded by extremely wealthy peers. When she knocks over an expensive vase belonging to the "host club," she's recruited by the club to act as a host in order to pay off her debt, obliging her to disguise herself as a boy. She quickly befriends each member of the club.

Family Life

Haruhi's father Ranka is a cross-dresser and very over protective of Haruhi. She lost her mother ten years prior to the series but still idolizes her. The reason that she worked so hard to get into Ouran is to become a lawyer like her mother. She is very independent which tends to strain her relationship with her father but its mostly because she knows that he works hard to support her so she doesn't want to inconvenience him.

Shortly before the story begins, Haruhi cut her long hair short, and as she also often wears shapeless unisex clothing at school, she is often mistaken for a boy; she also uses the gender neutral first-person pronoun 自分 (jibun, "myself") in Japanese. Outside school, she sometimes (but not consistently) dresses more femininely. When asked about this, she says that she feels gender is unimportant and it doesn't matter how others perceive her. Haruhi readily agrees to disguise herself as a boy in order to participate in the host club, and seems comfortable doing so. Despite all this, she never unambiguously articulates a non-cisgender identity.

Because of this, fans sometimes interpret Haruhi as nonbinary, agender, genderqueer and/or trans. There is debate over her canonical gender identity.

One FailFandom-Anon user explained why they felt Haruhi's narrative was a nonbinary one:

Haruhi passed for a boy even before her gender was "revealed" and said that she didn't mind the fact that she was assumed to be a boy. She also performs feminity in the host club when she's asked to, she's just assumed to be a boy dressed upa s a girl in those moments. That's far from a typical "female narrative" of a girl who diguises herself as male because of misogyny, despite secretely wishing to perform feminity. That's a nonbinary narrative.
