Hard Target is slash 76-page (37,000 words) Miami Vice novel by Emily Langston.
The art is by Amontillado.
Summary
Hard Target answers the question of who really killed Borrasca and covers Castillo's past relationship with Jack Gretsky, Reese's desire for revenge, and Sonny's hearing about the events of the Burnett saga.
The Sequel
The story is continued in Snowstorm. Where Hard Target provides the first backstory on Castillo/Gretsky, Snowstorm continues with Crockett/Castillo.
From the zine: "At the risk of being hopelessly optimistic, I plan to have SNOWSTORM — a sexy hurt/comfort story - available at MediaWest ‘98, to be followed by a full length slash novella entitled MISSING IN ACTION at Ecclecticon [sic] ‘98."
"Missing in Action" was never published.
Author's Note
Before I tell you a little about my Miami Vice universe. I’d like to start by sincerely thanking you for buying my first ever fanzine. I’d also like to thank some other important people who’ve been instrumental in helping me complete this project.

Special thanks are also due to the incredibly talented new fan artist, Amontillado. What can I say? WOW! When I first talked to Amontillado about doing some art for this story, I never imagined I’d see anything like this! Thank you, dear friend, for bringing my fantasies to life. Thanks are likewise due to the folks at Savannah Velvet Press. Like the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, they took my pumpkin disk and turned it into a golden coach!
And while I’m being thankful. I’d like to tip my hat to some folks who’ve been huge inspirations to me; Flamingo and Susan K. Dundas for the many happy hours I’ve spent enjoying your Miami Vice fiction; to the song vidder Tolbran; to John, Paul, George, and Ringo for providing the song lyrics sprinkled throughout this tale; and to Don Johnson, Edward James Olmos and other Miami Vice actors for putting flesh to the characters about whom I care so deeply.
All this said, allow me to welcome you to my slash universe, a steamy place where our familiar favorites (and a few unexpected faces) find love in the midst of adventure and danger, not to mention unexpected karmic consequences.
HARD TARGET is just the first of several interrelated stories and novellas exploring the smoldering attraction between Crockett and Castillo that inevitably culminates in a passion of epic proportions. Firmly grounded in the series, these slash love stories span decades — from the killing fields of Cambodia, to the subtropical city of Miami. I hope you enjoy this and upcoming stories in the HARD TARGET universe as much as I enjoy writing them. Feel free to drop me a line, letting me know what works for you — and what doesn’t!
