A fan's happy fandom bubble is the sphere of friends, relationships, and communities that caters to the fan's own particular view of her fandom. If she believes in a certain 'ship or fanonical view of events, then those in her happy fandom bubble are people who agree with her or who will not harsh her squee. A fan's happy fandom bubble is burst if she reads meta or community posts that argue strenuously against what she believes; for example, bashing her favourite character. It is possible to maintain a happy fandom bubble while still engaging in lively debate or analysis, as long as those topics which the fan holds sacred are not denigrated. A happy fandom bubble may also include comfort fic or fanwanking that maintains, upholds, or argues in favour of the fan's beliefs.
Example Usages
A disgruntled Marauders fan on the Harry Potter movies:
- "At this point, I'm glad that they have pushed the HBP premier date back because I'm afraid that I will be so disgusted with the film that I don't want it to burst my happy fandom bubble just yet."[1]
Someone posting about contentious topics:
- "Guys, if you don’t want your squee hashed—and that’s fair, I’m all about protecting one’s happy fandom bubble—I recommend not reading any further."[2]
Fan Landers discussing how to stay mellow when fandom annoys you:
- "Failing that, remember your happy fandom bubble. Be it a specific episode of your canon, a novel-length fic that can absorb your attention, a story you are writing, or a picspam you are building to express your joy about a pairing or show, your happy fandom bubble can protect you from incursions of srs bzns."[3]
