Hans Capon/Henry is the canonical pairing of Sir Hans Capon and Henry of Skalitz in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance fandom. The pairing can be canonical if the player, controlling Henry, during the second game of the series, chooses to kiss Hans when prompted. This is only possible if the player has selected the 'heart' dialogue options during the game up to that point.
Canon
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Henry and Hans meet for the first time during the main quest. They initially do not get along due to Hans' pretentiousness over Henry being a peasant.
The two later have a duel, that is stacked against the player due to the expected player's inexperience with a bow at that point in the game, during which the two argue the whole time.
They eventually get into a fistfight and are consequentially punished and forced into hunting together. During the hunting trip, Hans is captured by two Cuman and then rescued by Henry. The two then become friends.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Several instances along the game must be triggered in order to achieve the romance. These involve telling Hans that Henry cares about him and reassuring him during difficult moments. During the quest "Hunger and Despair", Henry must go on a dangerous mission. If Henry goes to Hans' room, he'll tell Henry about the tale of Lancelot and Galehaut (not to be confused with Galahad), sharing his wish that he could be the one to save Henry for once. The moment brings the two together and Henry can choose to kiss Hans, thus initiating the romance.

Homophobia in gaming spaces and Daniel Vávra's denial of "wokeness"
Fans have shipped Hansry since the first game, often sharing online how they believed there was a great potential for them as a pairing.[1] When KCDII's lead dev, Daniel Vávra, compared KCD's prolonged success with the recently out Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the implication was that it was the game's forced "wokeness" that explained the lack of success, instead of its deviation from the Dragon Age games, lack of immersive writing, focus on a particular player pairing as universally canon etc.[2] Queerphobic fans latched on to the post, which showed KCD's continued success after many years of being out, as a confirmation that lack of "woke" in games made them better. The dev did not discredit this. Many, who were already discouraged from ever seeing the pairing as canon in the first game, were disappointed and considered his actions as an obvious indication that the ship could not exist. Several people removed KCDII from their game wishlists and decided to boycott the game, which hadn't come out yet.
Leaks then circulated, about canon same sex romance options in the game because the game got banned in Saudi Arabia.[3][4] The lead dev put out a statement defending the same sex romance options (and the black characters) that appear.[5] Due to the anti-woke rhetoric, some fans believed the leaks to be false. When the review embargo lifted, Hansry got confirmed and all hell broke loose. Notably, immediately after the game was out, IGN put out a video showing how to romance Hans and has since doubled down on showing content for the pairing, irking many homophobic fans of the game.[6][7]
Since the second game's release the support of the "anti-woke" fans has been revoked, and many small conflicts and discussions have since erupted, including rumours that game copies had massively been returned due to the same sex content. The dev has denied this.[8]
Several homophobic fans have begun calling the, now canon, relationship underage, with one outlet naming it a "graphic depiction of child sodomy".[9] This is due to the real life Hans Capon having been 15 in the year the game takes place, according to a Codex entry from the first game (though his birth year was not fully confirmed by historians). [10][11] It's important to note that, there was no such uproar when the character in question, then actually younger, was having sexual relations with women in the first game. Luke Dale, the voice actor, mo-cap and face model for Hans Capon was 22 when cast in the first game.[12] He has comedically mocked the accusations on Twitter.[13]
Since KCDII came out, "anti-woke" fans have felt disappointed and angry that Daniel Vávra had lied to them regarding "woke" content not existing in the game. The dev had previously stated that same sex relationships and black people have existed in that area of Europe at the time, plus, he was not forced to put any content in the game and thus, the game isn't "woke".[14]
Common Tropes and Themes
- Forbidden love/Star-crossed lovers: During the time of the game's setting, same sex relationships were frowned upon and even criminalised by the church and kingdom.
- Secret Relationship: Any romantic relationship the two may have needs to be kept a secret due to how it's regarded by society.
- Rivals to Lovers: Hans actively provoked Henry when they first encountered each other leading to a tumultuous first meeting. Later the two become friends when Henry saved Hans' life. During KCDII they then become lovers.
- Power imbalance: Hans is a lord and Henry is a peasant/knight.
- Period-Typical Homophobia: The game takes place during a war in Bohemia in 1403.
- Infidelity: Since homosexuality was considered a sin and Hans is expected to get married, many fanworks show this trope. It's usually with Hans' future wife.
- Religious Guilt: Due to them being Christian, they both have conflicting thoughts about sodomy.
- Protectiveness: Hans and Henry care for each other. Henry commonly saves Hans, and Hans wishes he could do the same for Henry.
