Guy of Gisbourne (also Gisborne, Gisburne and many other variants) is a character in the Robin Hood legend who serves, with the Sheriff of Nottingham, as the major antagonist to Robin. He is sometimes portrayed as the sidekick of the Sheriff and sometimes as a more powerful independent villain serving Prince John. He is often a rival suitor for Marian. His earliest appearance is in the ballad "Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne".[1]
Gisborne appears in several versions of the story, including:
- Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle (1883 novel)
- Robin Hood (1922 silent film), played by Sam De Grasse
- The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938 film), played by Basil Rathbone
- Robin of Sherwood (1984–6 ITV television series), played by Robert Addie. See Guy of Gisburne (Robin of Sherwood character)
- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991 film), played by Michael Wincott
- Robin Hood (2006–9 BBC television series), played by Richard Armitage. See Guy of Gisborne (Robin Hood TV series character)
