In fan activities, a guest can mean many things, but is often used to refer to:

  • Someone who accesses a website without being logged in or having an account for the website in question. On some sites, the term anon is used instead.
  • Someone who visits a website or page.
  • Someone in attendance with a specific role, such as interacting with fans or being on a panel, at a convention or other fan event. They are usually connected to the focal fandoms of the event in question, such as authors, producers, actors, or other roles. Often called special guests, guest speakers, or guests of honor.

Examples

  • Someone who leaves a comment on an AO3 fanwork without being logged into an account is called a Guest or Guest Commenter. There are restrictions which can be applied on AO3 works to allow or prevent guests from commenting on or seeing the works.
  • When personal fansites or individual fanwork archives were more popular in the 1990s and 2000s, many of these sites included a guestbook where guests to the site could leave their thoughts or, more often, compliments on the fanworks posted.
