Recs and Reviews

I am stunned and amazed this one hasn’t been recced yet--or anything else by Wednesday, whom I consider to be one of the finest Q/O writers out there.

This was one of the first stories I saved to my hard drive, because I knew I’d want to read it again and again, and I have, many times since that first magical reading. It’s the story of what happens when Qui-Gon has his heart broken yet again, and Obi-Wan decides to do something about it once and for all.

The hot man-on-man action isn’t the heart of this story, or even the payoff, really--it’s just a bonus. The joy of this story is watching the very real and very deep friendship between these two men quicken into something more.[1]

Grounded by Lightning was the first piece of fanfiction I read in the Star Wars fandom, this fandom being one of the first I read in my long career of fanfiction reader and writer. I had already seen the movie and even though I had recognized the similarities between the Master and Apprentice relationship and the Japanese version of a Master and his student in the samurai culture, I had not really thought of the romantic side of such a relationship until I stumbled onto the world that is Star Wars (especially The Phantom Menace) fanfiction.

The story starts out with Master Qui-Gon Jinn getting the boot by some cocky knight who thinks that there's more and better out there than the relationship he already has. Suffice to say that Padawan Kenobi, who's been harboring a gigantic crush on his Master decides to take the chance and subtly starts to woo his Master. Well subtly only for Qui-Gon Jinn since everybody else seems to realize rather quickly what is going on and why Obi-Wan is suddenly sticking like glue to his Master.

Wednesday switches POV between Master and Padawan and allows us to see both sides of this courtship, the eager and smitten student who wants nothing more than to be noticed as a possible partner and the clueless and at times a tad confused teacher who slowly comes to realize that his Padawan is actually rather attractive and that said Padawan is secretly lusting after his Master.

The story has a happy end but since the whole plot takes place before Naboo and the events of the first movie, one can only assume that it will not stay that way. Except you are like me and imagine the whole thing taking place in an AU.[2]

grounded by lightning, by wednesday. qui/obi, nc-17, sw:tpm. a long, plotty, relationshippy story told mostly from obi-wan's pov. not unflawed in characterization, possibly a little over-angsty, but well-thought out, in some ways insightful, and deliciously lingering and sensuous.[3]

This is a wonderful, long, satisfying story. We get an insight into Qui-Gon's past and an enjoyable view of Jedi in their spare time. And when Qui and Obi finally come together, it's just beautiful.[4]

Why is Obi-Wan always cast int he roll of the slut? I haven't the faint idea he didn't come across like that to me but what ever maybe it's a fandom thing. This fic is solid the character voices are strong and real. Real enough that I want to smack Obi in the being for all the self pity.I really do love these character but they are Jedi and I would have thought they would be a bit ..smarter concerning emotions.[5]
