Grey's Anatomy is a U.S. TV show that airs on ABC. The show's producer is Shonda Rhymes. Some fans are very appreciative of Shonda's deliberate inclusion of actors of various races, focus on female characters, and inclusion of gay characters.
The medical drama series focuses on a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle, including several who began their careers at the facility as interns. One of the doctors and the show's namesake, Meredith Grey, is the daughter of a famous surgeon. She struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues, particularly the hospital's one-time chief of surgery, Richard Webber, due to a pre-existing relationship between them—Webber and Meredith's mother had a personal relationship when Meredith was young.
Controversies
Burke, Washington, and the F-Word
Preston Burke began the series as a deeply compelling character who stood out for his maturity and competency in a sea of infant-like doctors. Then the actor who played him, Isaiah Washington, referred to his co-star T.R. Knight as Dempsey's "little faggot" during rehearsal. Many previous fans of Burke's were conflicted in their admiration for the character after the actor's misbehavior. Washington compounded his error by saying he had not called his co-star a faggot during press at the 2007 Golden Globes. After that, fans perceptions of the actor conflated with their perceptions of the character. Many felt he was suddenly emotionally manipulated Cristina Yang, his love interest. As a result of the controversy and Washington's seemingly erratic behavior the character was written off the show.
Mer/Der: Love it or Hate it?
There's a lot of controversy about this relationship. Many fans fall into one of the following camps.
- Love the relationship between the two characters, love the back and forth, two steps forward, one step back of its progress.
- Love the relationship, hate the fact that the characters can't seem to get together.
- Hate the relationship because they believe Derek should be eaten by bears.
Izzie and Denny
Izzie fell in love with a patient, harmed him so he would receive a heart transplant, and was punished by first having to organize prom and then having the patient die on her. Some people think that's romantic. Others feel the whole episode reveals the essentially selfish nature of the Izzie character, and also points out the inability of Shonda Rhimes to successfully negotiate the delicate balance between Grey's Anatomy as a night-time soap opera and Grey's Anatomy as a medical drama.
The Calzona Break Up
While many a separation has hurt the fandom few so profoundly fractured a part of the fandom as Arizona Robbins' infidelity and the eventual break up of Calzona.
Factions in the fandom quickly formed with there being two distinct "camps," Team Callie and Team Arizona.
Team Callie found Arizona to be callous and cruel and felt her lack of empathy and loquaciousness, in addition to her infidelity, were the chief contributors to the break up. Team Arizona, meanwhile, focused on the loss of Arizona's leg and felt that this, her PTSD from the accident, and her general tendency towards being taciturn contributed. Callie's own "inability to listen" was also said to be to blame.
The show has yet to fully address the issue.

Grey's Anatomy brought the practice of giving nicknames to popular characters and combining pairings' names into portmanteaus into the mainstream. Some of the nicknames and portmanteaus became small cultural phenomenons themselves. Particularly McDreamy and McSteamy.
