Going Home is a Kirk/Spock story by Anna Parrish.
It was published in the print zine Charisma #12.
Summary
"Kirk befriends a single woman with a young son, causing Spock to feel left out and useless. As a result, Spock leaves, thinking Kirk will be better off with someone who can give him a family (ie, children) which Spock, of course, cannot do. Misunderstandings lead to heartbreak and reunion in this sensitive story about age, growth and change."
Reactions and Reviews
1991
I found this to be one of the author's best-writtenstories. For the most part, the characters, dialogue, and events felt very real. The story was concise,well-paced, and smoothly written.
If Kirk and Spock hadn't been bonded for 21years, I would have thought Spock's thought process and decision to leave Kirk right on target (though I also would have wanted to shake him silly). But after all their years together, he surely must have learned how to communicate his insecurities to Kirk, so they could have resolved the problem less dramatically than Spock leaving for six months. That solution seemed unrealistic to me. After that point, the story lost a lot of its drive, and the ending came across as rather flat.
One observation. On page 101, Kirk tells Jamie (who was, by the way, a very well-drawn character), "A girl can do what a boy can, and you'll have to protect her more, teach her to be stronger and not be weak, not stand back and take things simply because she's a female." I really hope the 23rd century isn't going to be this chauvinistic!
Overall, a well-written story of "family life". [1]
