A glitch may occur in universes that deal with surrogates, simulations, or other worlds that take place in a computer environment. This trope shows characters experiencing any number of glitches - things that happen, but shouldn't be. The term 'glitch in the matrix' is often used colloquially when referring to moments of déjà vu, seeing doppelgängers, "false memories" somewhat in the realm of the Mandela Effect, and so on. In fanworks, it is most often portrayed in fanart, where a character's binary system is disrupted leading to their 'avatar' wavering. The character may begin to split apart in some ways, with colors foreign to their natural appearance defining the separation, or pixelation.
These works may carry an air similar to that of Whump where a glitch is seen as an illness, on par with a computer virus, and can be portrayed as very scary and even life-threatening to the character.
In Disney Dreamlight Valley, Vanellope von Schweetz experiences glitches.
