Reactions and Reviews

When I finished this story I was so warmed by it, all I

could do was say out loud, "Ohhhhh, what a sweet story!" Good thing I was alone, but I was extremely touched and thought to myself, this is another of my favorites in this zine.

It is episode-based, which I always love. Set after "All Our Yesterdays", Spock has contracted severe pneumonia as a result of the frigid conditions he endured on Sarpeidon. When we enter the rec room he is seated at the holiday table. He had recovered enough to be allowed to attend the ship's Thanksgiving dinner, wrapped in thick blankets and watched over by the eagle-eyed Dr. McCoy and the ever-so-solicitous Captain of his soul. I liked the style of this author; she even describes the turkey and all the fixins’, the veggies, stuffing but not the desserts, Spock wasn't allowed dessert. Yet!

First of all, in this beautifully drawn scene, we learn of Kirk's unswerving devotion to his mate while Spock's been critically ill. Without sloppy sentimentality we are show the lengths Kirk will go to in order to help keep his lover alive. Somehow he smoothly manages his duties with his lifelong commitment to Spock. There are many poignant moments in sickbay when Kirk tends the weakened Vulcan, sitting him up and holding him while Spock rids himself of the awful effluence coming from his lungs. I empathized completely with these acts and was right with Kirk as he fought fatigue and fear for his lover. Simply gloriously written, I thought, almost poetic in many places.

When Spock is nearly recovered, it is to the cabin he shares with his Human that he steals. For their is another tradition he and Jim have celebrated since their relationship began. Spock is intent on keeping that tradition up.

At this point my romantic radar was going full tilt. Kirk, on coming from the shower, finds a naked Vulcan in his bed. A determined one, too. Spock proves to his lover, through mental and physical contact, that he will not be denied and that his actions on Sarpeidon with Zarabeth had no impact on his love for Jim. It's all gravy after that!

The searing love scene is raw and tender at the same time and heart-rendingly beautiful. Spock is so fetching! I am constantly amazed how he can embody such innocence and sophistication, such gentleness and strength. Of course the same goes for our Kirk, he is simply endearing. Once again I strongly urge you to read this story. It left me sighing and giving thanks of my own for authors such as this who are helping keep Kirk and Spock's love alive. [1]
