#GiveElsaAGirlfriend (sometimes seen as #giveelsaagirlfriend) is a twitter hashtag used to show support for Elsa getting a girlfriend after the first Frozen film.

Less commonly, the phrase was also used on other social media sites, such as Tumblr.

Origin

Queercoding of Elsa

Many queer fans saw Elsa's arc in the first film as analogous to the experiences of queer people coming out of the closet, with the song Let it Go especially resonating with said community. Further fuelled by her lack of shown interest in men, headcanons about her being queer - particularly the lesbian and aroace identities - became widespread.

Initial Tweet

The first recorded use of the hashtag is a tweet by lexi4prez on 1st May 2016.[1] From there, the retweets and original tweets from other users had the tag trending.

Spread

The hashtag became well known not only within fandom, but reached outside it into the mainstream. Many articles were written about it from mainstream media sources.

The campaign reached members of the cast and crew. In September 2016, Elsa's voice actress Idina Menzel was asked by Miley Cyrus on the Ellen DeGeneres Show whether Elsa should get a girlfriend, and both actresses showed positivity towards the idea.[2]

Impact

Frozen 2

Trailer

Upon the release of the teaser trailer for Frozen 2 in February 2019, fans immediately began to speculate on whether a girl seen briefly in the trailer would be Elsa's girlfriend. As more information came out about the film, and finally once the film was released, shipping of the two significantly waned as it was revealed the girl was actually Elsa's mother.

Elsamaren

People shipped Elsa and Honeymaren from the second Honeymaren showed up in the trailers and there’s nothing in the movie to dissuade someone from that.[3]
