Excerpt
She switched off her scanners now, content in her situation. Yes, she was straight on. She was safe. For what must have been the tenth time since
she'd undertaken this assignment she paused to wonder whether or not she might not be getting rather too old for this sort of thing. She sat down gratefully and drew two or three deep breaths before reaching for the medikit stored reassuringly near to her hand. She cut open the fabric of her trousers-leg automatically, baring the dreadful wound in her thigh, all the time considering not her injury but the question. After all, she was nearly sixty, her children were all grown, herself a grandmother more than once over — casually she attended to her wound. Not as bad as it might have been, but still rather dreadful; the soft-headed projectile had pierced to the bone and expanded on contact. Either they weren't using the explosive kinds on Godevewe yet or this one was a dud — or a timed charge. She shuddered at the thought. She'd have to risk extraction. It was entirely possible she'd been hit with a timed projectile, and she would not know until too late when the charge was set to go off. It would be her death, if—

Susan Matthews' Ama Epeel in "Ghost in Far Sector" (TS #1) is at the far end of the age spectrum covered here, a grandmother nearly sixty years old, acting as a spy and courier for the Alliance after years of freelancing. She is a pilot with her own ship, a fighter and a thoroughly competent individual who commands respect by her ability and performance. Escaping the Imperials with a vital tape, she was seriously injured and her ship was crippled to the extent that she now has power for either life support or a signal beam, but not both. She coolly chooses the beacon to ensure the tape's retrieval, and is nearly dead when Han almost accidentally locates her. [1]
[It] tells of a rescue of an Alliance agent who is marooned in a decidedly spooky area of the galaxy. Susan sets the eerie tone quite well, but I was a bit let down to find that nothing really spooky happens to Han and Chewie. All the build-up, the tales of weird things that happened to spacers in Far Sector, remained only legends after all; Han's erratic actions had a tangible cause. [2]
"Ghost in Far Sector" by Susan Matthews started out very promising:, but the end was a lot-down. Too many questions were left unanswered. [3]
"Ghost in Far Sector" was some spook story. Don't suppose anyone will ever figure out just what was out there. Was it really just in Han's head — why did it not affect Chewie if it was real? Weird! [4]
"Ghost in Far Sector" is another in an astonishingly chilling number of SWars ghost stories I've run into. Amazing how a movie so cheerful produces such wonderful spooks. [6]
I thought "Ghost in Far Sector" had some interesting ideas in it and good moments, but the necessary mood and tension wasn't maintained so I finally found it disappointing. [7]
