Gem Egg Hell

Gem Egg Hell is a head canon and/or alternate universe where the Gems from the show Steven Universe can reproduce via laying eggs. The term "Gem egg hell" likely started out as a joke but quickly became the term used to refer to any egg related or oviposition (egg laying porn) art and fanfiction about Steven Universe. The AU began on Tumblr long before the Tumblr Purge of 2019. The earliest mention of Gem egg hell comes from Mar 31, 2015 when the Tumblr blog "gem-egg-hell" began, based on their archives.[1] In the replies to a 2017 question on who started the AU/headcanon, high-roller-yunalesca said:
Well, as far as I can tell, the now-deactivated gemshippingtrash account was responsible for creating the Gem Egg Hell AU as a way of expressing an ovipositor fetish.[2]
The Headcanon
In Gem egg hell the aliens of Steven Universe (called "Gems"), who have non-physical light-based bodies, and who in canon reproduce by pumping special liquids into minerals until they become sentient, are actually capable of sexual reproduction. In this headcanon gems often have both a phallus and a slit, with the phallus being tentacle-like. One gem may lay eggs inside another to make them pregnant. The pregnant gem later lays the eggs and they hatch into babies (called "Gemlings") who are similar in appearance to the gem type of their parents (such as a Pearl/Amethyst having babies who are either a pearl or an amethyst). More rarely, Gemlings can look like a combination of their parents. [3] Some people headcanon the eggs as being gem-like, making them look like just rocks or shiny stones.[4] Gem eggs are also called geodes.
While a large part of gem egg hell includes NSFW material, particularly related to the oviposition kink, other parts of the headcanon are more focused on simply making cute fanart of gem babies. For example a blog titled "sallychanscraps" made SFW fanart of Peridot/Jasper egg babies based off of NSFW gem egg hell headcanon posts by the blogger "gemshippingtrash."[5] Similarly, some headcanons are about how the parents take care of their children in cute ways, such as Jasper licking her children like a mother cat.[6]
