Gay pants is a fannish meme, mostly in LiveJournal fandom. It is a way to express squee over a source text. The phrase was coined by elynross in 2003.[1]
Gay pants came to stand for everything that was gay about pants. Maybe the pants themselves were gay, or maybe the pants caused people to become gay, or maybe the pants just encouraged an interest in gay activism, but gay pants they were.
The most common place to run into gay pants was LiveJournal icons. The pants spread like wildfire and the phrase quickly became a panfandom phenomenon. Soon Bertie Wooster, Wolverine, Buffy Summers, and JC Chasez were all featured in icons with "gay pants" slogans.
