The Gates of Horn and Ivory was a mailing list created by Rossi for Vertigo and independent comics fanfiction. At its height it had 15 members and allowed posting fanfiction and art, discussion and feedback. From the list's group description:
Welcome to the Gates of Horn and Ivory. Named for the Vertigo Dreaming graphic novel, this group is for Vertigo and independent comic fanfiction. If your fanfic tastes extend past the mainstream companies, this is possibly what you've been looking for. Feedback is actively encouraged - in fact, I'd like it to be an unofficial house rule that everyone on the list must send feedback (public or private) at least once a month (provided there's something to feedback!). Of course, I can't control that, but I'd like to see it happen any way.Gates of Horn and Ivory - Yahoogroups - via Wayback (archived Oct 23/17.
The name of the list comes from a description of Dream's domain and the gates which allow admittance; it also coincides with a 1998 paperback collection of stories about the Dreaming. The term itself are a literary allusion dating back to Homer's Odyssey, determining true dreams (which come through the Gate of Horn) and false ones (which pass through the Gate of Ivory).
The list was not solely for the Dreaming fanfic, or even just Vertigo comics properties. Independent comics, such as Powers, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Lazarus Churchyard, Rising Stars, Fables and others were also welcome. Basically if it didn't fit the mainstream comics fanfiction profile, it could be posted.
Unfortunately the content of the list was lost when Yahoo shut down their mailing group service; the list had long since ceased to be active at the time Yahoo sent their notices of impending closure and no backup was made. There was an accompanying Livejournal created by Sascha, however it only has ten posts made between 2003 and 2008.
