Garry's Mod is a sandbox simulator for Valve's Source engine created by FacePunch studios and published by Valve. Although it was first a fan-made mod of Half-Life 2, it has since become multifandom.
Since 2006, it has been used to create countless animations and short films of primarily Valve's video gaming properties. Notable exceptions are its thriving Splatoon scene, which is a Nintendo property.
Garry's Mod has its own scene of fan-made 3D models, stages and game modes, such as prop hunt. Many 3D modelers in media fandom get their start with the Garry's Mod community. Many GMOD works are very humorous in nature, boarding on YouTube Poops, and serious works are rare. Many early GMOD works are considered fandom classics.
In the community for the 3D animation program MikuMikuDance, GMOD's community is somewhat infamous for taking MMD models and porting them to their game without permission. Many 3D animators use both despite the slight tension between the two communities.
In 2012, Source Filmmaker would be released by Valve. It is strictly an animation tool, thus has no community stages like GMOD. However, making animation is simpler on SFM, and more serious work is usually created through that software instead.
