1983: Con Report
Cedar Rapids, Iowa was the location for the third convention of Joni Gillepsie. This year Judson Scott joined the regulars, Jimmy Doohan and Jesco von Puttkamer, for this year's very enjoyable convention held at the Holiday Inn Holidome.[...]
Judson Scott is certainly at home on stage...a consummate performer. He's funny, talented with impressions, and thinks quickly. He "sells" himself very well, an advantage in the acting business.
Jimmy was suffering from the "flu", and although I know he felt "rotten", did his best to be accommodating to the fans. One came away an even more dedicated "victim" of that "Doohan charm".
Jesco dazzled everyone (as usual) with his articulate and extremely intelligent conversations during the group panels, as well as his usual enjoyable solo talks.
One highlight of the con must be the brunch on Sunday morning. The food was plentiful, hot, and delicious...only the Henry VIII in St. Louis was better in my opinion.
I shared a dealer's table with Sharon and Mona, who were premiering ET III (if you don't have it, you should get it soon. It's very good!). Fanzine collectors had a good selection to choose from, and the professional dealers, though few, had everything. It was just the right size dealers room for the size con...and everyone came away happy and broke.
The art room featured some exceptional artwork, mostly of Judson Scott as the Phoenix, or as Joachim. One piece of artwork of Jimmy, however, was my particular favorite. It was of Jimmy as King Lear, and the last bid I saw was $150.00. I manned the dealers table, packing up, during the auction, so I don't know what it finally went for. I would have loved to stay for the rest of the auction and the final talks, but it was a good thing we left when we did....we encountered snow all the way from Iowa to St. Louis, and rain the rest of the way home... [1]
One of my fantasies came true-- not the best one, mind you, but close. Judson Scott came to Cedar Rapids and appeared at Galactic Enterprise III. I haven't recovered yet.His usual ensemble of tight jeans and a brown leather jacket set the crowd of around 300 off, and his amusing comebacks to questions about "The Phoenix," "Star Trek-- The Wrath of Khan" (Ricardo and I would exchange chests) helped to make for a fun weekend.
On a more serious note, when I asked him about Peter Barton's accident, the one in which he was hurt on the set of "Matthew Star," Judson told us that Barton was injured more seriously than the media reported. He fell on top of an Army flare, the type that were used in Vietnam to flush out the enemy. Not only did he receive second and third degree burns, but Peter also sustained blood poisoning from the material that the flare was made out of. It brought home to us the dangers of working on television and films.
James Doohan and a NASA scientist (Jesco von Puttkamer) were also on hand. Jimmy was his usual charming self, a real delight to talk to. Jesco never ceases to amaze me with his knowledge. He showed us films on the Shuttles, and filled us in on the space program.
All in all it was a wonderful blend from Judson's sex appeal to Jesco's space appeal. If any of these three guys are appearing near you, I'd go take a look. I can guarantee you won't be bored. [2]
