Mobile Suite Gundam GQuuuuuuX is the forthcoming 16th instalment in the Gundam franchise. Like all mainline Gundam series, it is a mecha anime series in the military SF genre.

Canon

Setting and Premise

GQuuuuuuX is set in an alternate Universal Century timeline. In the GQuuuuuuX universe, Char found the RX-78-2 Gundam before Amuro could stumble across it. Char subsequently stole the Gundam and used it to help the Principality of Zeon win the One Year War before both he and the Gundam vanished.

The story of GQuuuuuuX picks up five years after Char's disappearance and follows the adventures of high schooler Amate Yuzuriha, who meets a refugee named Nyaan and joins an underground mobile suit fighting ring called Clan Battle.

Suletta points at an image of a soldier and tells Amate, "Now, at some point, you might see a bad guy on the ground while you're in your mobile suit. What you want to do in this situation is NOT smash him like a bug." Amate takes diligent notes.

Following promotional materials and especially the release of the preview film, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning, which was stitched together from the first few (then-unreleased) episodes of the anime, fans immediately began to comment positively on similarities to The Witch from Mercury. In particular, fans praised Sunrise and Studio Khara for committing to a second series in a row featuring a young female protagonist[1] and potentially also a canonical yuri ship.[2] (The Witch from Mercury featured the canonical F/F ship Suletta/Miorine, and GQuuuuuuX's preview film teased both the F/F ship Amate/Nyaan and the F/M ship Amate/Shuji.)

Moniker

The English-speaking fandom commonly refers to the series as GQuacks, referencing several early online posts that (erroneously) stated that the intended English pronunciation of "GQuuuuuuX" was "G-quacks." Creators affiliated with the series later clarified that the intended English pronunciation is "G-kwucks," but many people stuck with GQuacks, finding it funnier. GQux is another common abbreviation of the title.

Ships

It is early days for the fandom yet, but fans are already provisionally shipping the three main characters in various combinations, especially Amate/Nyaan and Amate/Nyaan/Shuji. Fans also ship Char/Challia, as Challia is Char's former subordinate who has spent years relentlessly searching for Char since his disappearance.
