Amuro Ray is a main character in the Universal Century or UC timeline of the Gundam franchise. He is the protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam and its related media.

Amuro is introduced as a teenager and participates in the One Year War. He is the main protagonist of the show.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Amuro is placed under house arrest after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam as the government doesn't trust Newtypes. After escaping house arrest he goes on to join the group Karaba.

Amuro is a popular character in fandom, though at times overshadowed by his more famous rival. In the broader anime community he is seen as an influential and iconic character and connections are sometimes drawn between Amuro and later mecha protagonists.
