Futuremania.de is probably the most comprehensive German-language fan site on Edmond Hamilton's science fiction series "Captain Future". It was created end of March 2003 by Futuremania-Curtis and is still operated and run by him to this day.
The site offers much more than a simple data collection – with its analyses, views and insights (as well as lots of sources) it also places the series into a broader context.

Contents

The site presents Information on the Captain Future pulp series' origins as well as on the Japanese anime (and the heavily cut German version), complete with lots of background information, a bibliography section (covering the pulps' German, Japanese and US-American issues), an in-depth data collection on Future‘s space ship, the „COMET“, an episode guide, a glossary and a news section. It also features analyses, e.g. on the Captain‘s iconic space suit/armour or the series‘ visual design and, since October 2023, also a detailed comparison of the anime episodes with their corresponding pulp novels.

History

Futuremania first went live on the „captainfuture.org“ domain. On gaining impetus and for copyright reasons, a switch seemed inevitable, so that the site shortly after go-live left the .org domain in order to move to a domain with a truly corresponding name, „futuremania.de“. A new frame-less design which is also usable on mobile devices was applied in 2016.

Its content originally was based on the Florian Bauman CF FAQ (with Baumann‘s permission), but soon expanded to analyses and additional background information. Also the idea of a Captain Future movie first was brought up by and discussed in Futuremania‘s own little forum before making its way into other portals, forums and discussion groups.

Activities

Futuremania not only wants to drum up for the series (pulps and animé) but also to draw attention to the fact that „Captain Future“ surely isn‘t „childrens‘ stuff“ but definitely one of the great Space Opera epics instead. Therefore, it is present with a Captain Future stand on selected conventions such as the „Science Fiction Treffen Speyer“ (annual German scifi convention at the Speyer Museum of Technics) since 2015 and thus offers not only a virtual but also a physical port of call for fans.
The site is also present on social media[1] where it's posting news regarding the franchise and the fandom.
