Futari Wa Precure, also known as simply Futari Wa, is the first season of the long running Precure franchise, cementing many of the staples seen in the franchise. Futari Wa ran from 2004 to 2005, and was part of the first generation of Precure. It ran for 49 episodes in Japan, with the dub (called Pretty Cure) running all episodes and running from 2009 to 2010.
This season is notable for introducing fan favourite characters Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro, who commonly show up in fanworks to this day. Futari Wa Precure is widely popular among the Precure fandom, but outside it is relatively small. It is more popular in Japan than western countries.

Plot Summary
Junior high school girls Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro are thrust into the role the roles of hero's when creatures from another world, Mepple and Mipple, select them to fight against the forces of the Dark Zone as Cure Black and Cure White. [1]

In Futari Wa Precure, due to the nature of Nagisa's and Honoka's relationship, yuri-shipping is predominant in the fandom. Cure Black/Cure White is perhaps the most common Precure ship overall, due to the status of the Futari Wa Precure season as the original season. Further, the prominence of this ship may be due to the close relationship depicted in the show, including the Romeo and Juliet episode. This episode featured Nagisa playing Romeo and Honoka Juliet and was considered to be a 'rare gem'[2] at the time of airing.
Reception
Generally, due to numerous cliches, Futari Wa Precure is considered, mediocre. However, fans list the fighting as the redeeming factor in Futari Wa Precure, as it takes on a more 'shonen' approach then other series[3] at the time, such as Sailor Moon. At the time of airing, some fans considered Futari Wa Precure to be boring, due to the nature of the 'girly' elements in the show. Further, the mascots were considered to be too annoying[4].
After the original airing, opinion became slightly more positive with fans appreciating the close relationship between Nagisa and Honoka. However fans still note the boringness of the season, yet with a bit more leniency towards it. Some fans saying that it's blandness was because the franchise was still 'taking shape', and that Futari Wa got a case of 'early installment weirdness'[5].
