From the Ashes: Axel Zine is a charity zine centered around the character Axel (or Lea) from Kingdom Hearts.

About

On January 8, 2020, Twitter user LichtenStrange_ posted an interest check for a charity zine for Axel with donations to the Australian bushfire relief fund[1]. This post would prompt the creation of the zine's social media account. Applications for moderators opened on January 15, 2020, and ended on January 22, 2020[2]. Artists and writers applications ran from January 22 to February 5, 2020[3].

Preorders opened on July 1, 2020 with the following pricing tiers[4]:

  • Digital Zine ($15)
  • Physical Zine and Digital Zine ($25)
  • Ultima Edition ($55, Limited) - Physical Zine, Digital Zine, Prints, Buttons, Stickers, Sticker Sheet, Charms, Stretch Goals

Stretch goals included a roll of washi tape at 25 orders, an enamel pin at 50 orders, and an acrylic standee at 100 orders[5].

A giveaway was run for a limited bundle and one of four hand painted prints of Axel's chakrams by LichtenStrange from July 3 to July 17, 2020[6]. The remaining three hand painted prints would be given to three randomly selected physical orders. A second giveaway was run from July 27 to August 1, 2020, for a 3D-printed chakram mandala made by MissLaneyLuck[7]. Preorders closed on August 1, 2020[8].

Orders began shipping out on October 5, 2020[9]. All physical orders were shipped out by October 30, 2020[10].

Leftover sales opened on November 25, 2020, and lasted until January 31, 2021[11]. The project closed with an announcement of $3,000.01 AUD donated to BlazeAid[12].

Concurrent Zine Controversy

Early into its creation, it became apparent that From the Ashes had begun activities at the same time as another Axel-themed charity zine, Flurry of Dancing Flames. Despite excitement that more Axel fan content would be coming, the existence of these two zines raised concerns that the two zines could be directly competing with each other, leading to fans urging either one of the zines to delay their schedules so as to allow potential buyers to buy both zines but at different times.

Another prevailing concern was a number of fans not wishing to interact with or participate in these zines because one of the mods happened to ship controversial pairings such as AkuRoku. This concern became a driving force for some fans to make callout posts and send harassing replies and direct messages to the zines' social media accounts in an attempt to force the zines to shut down or for mods to step down.

In a post on January 14, 2020, a mod of From the Ashes addressed the controversy and discourse, declaring that no mods would be stepping down from the project and no delays would come to the zine due to pre-existing interest, and that all interest checks, sourcing research, and initial mod discussion were conducted before Flurry of Dancing Flames resumed activities[13]. The mod team also declared that they were taking a stand against harassment and would report and block harassers.

An update on the drama came on January 15, 2020, when the mod team of From the Ashes confirmed that there had been talks between the mods of both zines[14]. The update explained that the similar scheduling was only a coincidence, and that there was no spite or competition involved the planning of either zine. The mods welcomed fans who wanted to participate in both zines.
