Flurry of Dancing Flame is a charity zine centered around the character Axel from the Kingdom Hearts games.

About

The project's social media account dropped a link to an inquiry for a zine about Axel on August 12, 2019, with the aim of starting applications in late December 2019 or early January 2010[1]. On January 31, 2020, the project announced that the zine would be splitting the proceeds between two charities, Direct Relief and Wires[2]. Applications for contributors opened on February 1, 2020, and ended on March 1, 2020[3][4]. All acceptance and rejection emails were sent out to applications on March 20, 2020[5].

Concurrent Zine Controversy

While Flurry of Dancing Flames was running contributor applications, another zine, From the Ashes, was also being run, having launched in January 2020. In addition to similar schedules, the zines were similar in that both were charity zines aimed to donate to wildfire relief charities. While some fans were thrilled that two zines about Axel were running at the same time and were willing to support both zines, not all fans were as excited.

The existence of these two zines raised concerns among fans that the two zines could be directly competing with each other, leading to fans urging either one of the zines to delay their schedules so as to allow potential buyers to buy both zines but at different times.

Another concern was a number of fans not wishing to interact with or participate in these zines because one of the mods happened to ship controversial pairings such as AkuRoku. This concern became a driving force for some fans to make callout posts and send harassing replies and direct messages to the zines' social media accounts.

The mod team for Flurry of Dancing Flames tweeted on January 15, 2020, an acknowledgement of From the Ashes and expressed excitement that there would be more content of their favorite character, while also urging fans to not harass the mods of the concurrent zine[16]. Another status update was posted shortly after that both mod teams had a pleasant conversation to resolve any issues in scheduling and reiterated that they did not condone harassment of any users affilated with any of the two zines and would block any user if the harassment continued.[17].

Twitter account and Kingdom Hearts zine tracker, khzines, ran a poll on April 4, 2020, asking fans if they were able to buy zines as they normally would at the time or if they hoped projects would delay preorders for financial reasons[18]. An overwhelming majority of fans voted to delay. In response to the poll, the mod team of Flurry of Dancing Flames announced the next day that they would not delay the zine, but would reevaluate if the situation did not improve[19].
