Reactions and Reviews

A bittersweet story of Spock's life after the death of his bondmate, and the breath of Jim's spirit that remains with him. It is told with a light touch and the story worked for me. [1]

Illogical as it seems, I don’t like to think of death being able to part Kirk and Spock, but if it must, I like the treatment it’s been given here. The story is redeemed by the idea that death doesn’t separate them after all, and the promise that they’ll be together again is strong. This was a well-constructed and believable principle. [2]

What a thrill to find a new story from one of my very favorite online authors in The Celebration Zine. Lyrastar had me hooked from her Author’s Note : “This is a bit of an alternate history where the events of Generations never happened. I trust that won’t upset anyone too much.” Since I regard Generations as an abomination which I saw once and have been trying to forget ever since, I immediately knew I was going to like her story! And I didn’t just like it, I absolutely loved it. It’s been 24 years since Kirk has died, and Spock is present at a new exhibit honoring the 100th anniversary of the Enterprise becoming the first ship to break through the galactic barrier. He tours the partial replica of the Enterprise built for the occasion , which brings back many memories. We learn that Spock melded with Kirk as he died, and some essence of Kirk is still with Spock, reappearing at random intervals to talk with him and inspire him to continue on without him for a while, before they will be together forever. Written with the author’s usual lyrical grace and style (her pen name is very appropriate, I think), this is a bittersweet but deeply moving story. [3]
