Reactions and Reviews

Now why didn't someone think of this before? Or since? The idea of Kirk attending the demolition of Enterprise after she is so ignobly decomissioned is so obviously a great story line, that I'm shocked I've never seen it used in another story. This is such a memorable event, told in such a way that you feel as if you are there with Kirk as he tries to prepare by drinking himself into oblivion on the eve of her destruction. Observing her demise isn't something he is required to do, but he cannot leave his silver lady to die alone. Spock locates him because of their attunement and joins him at the secluded barroom table, offering consolation and understanding. She was his home, too. Sharply stinging both men's conscience is the acknowledgement that their work has pulled them away from each other since being assigned to Starfleet Headquarters. Their conversation about this is very poignant and believable.

When their thoughts turn again to the Enterprise, Kirk tries to calmly explain the method they will use to send her atoms into the void of space. He tries to sound detached but fails. While Kirk finally sleeps for a few hours back at his apartment, Spock sits in the outer room, intent upon the computer, trying to find a way to purchase and save their gallant ship. Sadly, he realizes while the price could be met, he would have nothing left with which to crew and maintain her. He has tried, but failed. As unwelcome dawn arrives, he slips into bed with Kirk, holding him close.

I wanted to cry as they watched gallant Enterprise through the viewport, glinting in the sunshine as if to say her final farewell. This is very sad, but Kirk is not alone, and he knows that the man at his side is his promise for the future. Together they turn away while she is still intact and proud, the flash of the silent explosion lighting the way to their tomorrows. Sad and beautiful [1]
