Reactions and Reviews

Best FF That Gives the Best Explanation for the Existence of Fanny Packs That I've Ever Heard. Although, Believe Me, There Are Still a Number of Unanswered Questions on That Score. First Impressions, by kormantic. Stargate: SG1, Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson.

Okay. So I was very good and started this set with a traditional bodyswap. But now it is time for a bodyswitch. In this story, an encounter with aliens (god how I love the aliens of the SG universe: ready, willing, and able, the lot of them) leaves Daniel in a bar of soap. And Jack in Daniel's body. And his own. Frankly, Jack O'Neill probably should not be the first person on your list of potential temporary custodians of your body, given that in this one he uses Daniel's to eat revolting foodstuffs and watch Weekend at Bernie's II, which is probably against the law on more civilized planets. But that's why I love the concept of Jack in Daniel's body. I mean, you know, his personality in Daniel's - you know what, let's just move on and forget I ever started that sentence. This story contains a line that should be the basis of a whole challenge: "Are you saying I gave him my cooties?" Because, seriously. Tell me a fandom that sentence doesn't belong in, and I will tell you about a sad, sad fandom. But what I love most about this is how everyone reacts to Jack-as-Daniel; the scene in which Sam asks that Jack a version she wouldn't ask the real Jack just says volumes about that philosophical conundrum (look at all the big words I know!) I mentioned in the intro. So there's thinkiness in here, and gambling, and sex, and I just don't see how it could get any better than that.[1]

I talk so much about Daniel dying - well, and there's so much of it in the canon - that I figured I'd better recommend at least one story in which he does just that. In this, Daniel is dead: to begin with. Except there is definitely some doubt about that. (Sorry. Couldn't help it.) Which makes this really the perfect dead-Daniel story, because as many times as he dies in the canon, well, he's also still alive in the canon, and that's not because he's a sun-resistant vampire or a very linguistically gifted zombie. For Daniel, death is kind of like a truck stop: a mildly unpleasant place you have to go through on your way to somewhere else.

So, Daniel spends some time sitting in the parking lot of his metaphorical truck stop in this story. And, as always, he does not let death, certain or indefinite or simply improbable, stand in the way of his greatest natural gift, which is causing trouble for his team, and especially for one Jack O'Neill.

Plus, they all go to Vegas. And Jack and Daniel have sex. And Pares reveals the light-hearted side of two things many people fear (for good reasons, let me add): death and casinos. I really don't see how you could ask for better.[2]

A weird alien culture, a comatose Daniel, FEELINGS, and Jack trying to navigate it all—this is one of my very favorite Jack/Daniel stories. It's nice and long, and fairly plotty as the team has to figure out what happened to Daniel when he suddenly collapsed while trying to communicate with the nice alien tree-people-things. When the tree beings hand over something that looks like a bar of soap and talks like Daniel, that's when the story really kicks off. This one is a ride, including two distinct alien cultures, teaminess, and a great exploration of the characters—especially the relationship between Jack and Daniel and communication. (Also, this fic fully recognizes that Jack has cooties.)[3]

Daniel dies, you know, again, and then there's alien Vegas, which is just...awesome.[4]

this has pretty much everything you could want from a stargate fic, from near death experiences to body swapping to alien casinos. it’s also funny and excellently written with a very hot sex scene to finish. the jack-daniel banter is on point, and there’s a great team dynamic throughout; i love how present sam and teal’c are here, even though neither of them are involved in the central pairing. probably my favorite ever j/d fic, and if you haven’t read it yet you should go do so right now.[5]
