Firestorm is a DC Comics comic book series about the superhero of the same name, which has been taken up by several different characters.
Canon
Firestorm first appeared in Firestorm, the Nuclear Man #1 (March 1978). Characters that have held the mantel: Ronnie Raymond (1978–2004, 2011–present), Martin Stein (1990-?), and Jason Rusch (2004–present).
Firestorm has appeared in one animated movies: Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010).
Firestorm has also appeared in several animated series: Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show, The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Justice League Action.
The Firestorm character, Felicity Smoak, first appeared in Arrow (2013-present). And it wasn't until the spin-off series, The Flash (2014-present), that would establish Ronnie Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein as Firestorm. A Firestorm villain, Caitlin Snow version of Killer Frost, is a main character in the series and is Ronnie's fiancée (later wife & widow). In Season 2 of Flash, after Ronnie's apparent death, Martin Stein joined with Jefferson Jackson as Firestorm. Martin Stein and Jefferson Jackson join the cast of Legends of Tomorrow as main characters. Deathstorm (dark!Ronnie) appeared in Season 2 as well as Killer Frost!Caitlin from Earth-2.

Arrowverse
It wasn't really until Felicity Smoak appeared in the Arrow series, that the character took off in a large way. Her comic book history relationship with Ed Raymond is often hinted at in fanfiction.
With the release of the trailer of The Flash and now the premiere, the Firestorm character Caitlin Snow is becoming popular. In Season 1, they casted Robbie Amell along with Victor Garber as Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond & Martin Stein). Both characters, although Ronnie's in particular was very popular with the fandom. The pairing of Ronnie/Caitlin grew popular once it was revealed that he was her fiancé that died prior to the series and his return.
With Ronnie's apparent death in Season 2, a new Firestorm duo was created with Martin Stein & Jefferson Jackson who quickly gained favor in the fandom despite the lost of Ronnie's character. Stein and Jefferson joined the main cast of Legends of Tomorrow, and quickly gained more followers.
