Fest/Prompt Meme

Fest no Jutsu is a Naruto fanfiction and fan art fest which runs annually. It is organised on the r/NarutoFanfiction Discord server, affiliated with the Naruto Fanfiction subreddit, and hosted on AO3. Membership on the server is not a requirement for participation - however, Discord is the primary means of communication with participants, and discussion of event logistics. Joining the server - at least for timely announcements - is therefore encouraged by event moderators.

Event Overview

Participants sign up by entering up to 10 prompts, each of which can request fanfiction, fan art, or either. Prompts consist of a brief description of an idea the prompter would like to see realized via fanart and/or fic, alongside any "do not wants." These prompts may be submitted anonymously, under a pseud, or under the user's regular AO3 name. Although the fest allows crossover works, all prompts are required to incorporate at least some elements of the Naruto anime/manga universe. Requests for sexually explicit material are not permitted, considering the event is open to participation by minors.

During the creation stage, a prospective creator can claim as many prompts as desired, including prompts which other creators have already claimed. "Claiming" a prompt comes with no commitment to create a work fulfilling that prompt, while submitting a prompt comes with no guarantee of a gift. The minimum wordcount requirement for fics submitted to fill prompts is 500 words, while artists must submit work that is clean and complete at minimum. Prompt fills must be non-explicit and respectful of the prompter's "do not wants." Following a creation period of between 1-2 months, the collection with all fest works is revealed. Upon reveals, prompters are notified about any works created based on prompts they have submitted. After work reveals, there is a week-long period of anonymity, at which point creators are also revealed.

Prior Events

In 2020, the server ran its own exchange, with 24 works created.

In 2021, the server collaborated on Exchange no Jutsu, with 24 works created including server members and external participants.

2022

Prior to the event starting, the moderators made a post to check for interest in participating in a gift exchange or fest. There weren't enough people planning to get involved for an exchange to be feasible, due to issues with matching when there are just a small number of participants. As a result, a fest was considered to be a better option. 15 works were produced in total, off of 51 prompts.

2023

The 2023 Fest no Jutsu was organised somewhat last-minute. However, there was still enough interest that the fest was able to go ahead. There were 170 prompts submitted. In total, 25 works were produced over the course of the event.

2024

Fest no Jutsu prompting opened in June 2024, lasting approximately two weeks. Works were revealed in mid-September 2024 after a brief extension for creators. Twenty works of fanfiction were created from the 101 submitted prompts.[1]
