Once again I denied myself the pleasure of two wonderful 'zines, Fenfaer and its sequel Werefaer by judging a 'zine by its theme. Will I ever learn? I'd put this off for some time because of the particular AU theme: Alien Blair. Yeah, yeah. Quit laughing. That was my initial response. But this story SO worked for me. In this universe Blair's race of people, Fenfaer, genetically created Sentinels. Once they no longer had a need for them they decided they had to be killed or contained in the Conclave for the duration of their lives in order to protect the existence of the Fenfaer from being discovered by humans. There are two factions within the Fenfaer: those who what to destroy Sentinels and those who feel they deserve to be treated as any of their people. Blair belongs to the later group and is determined to save Jim. Unfortunately, the former faction comes into power and Blair, Rafe and the others of his kind and mindset must fight them in order to save Jim and ultimately the whole Fenfaer way of life. This is a fascinating story that is a super fast read. I love Rafe's part. Those of you who are Rafe fans will probably really enjoy this. His character was well done and his role excellent! And Naomi is great, too. Honestly, I don't really think Jim, Blair and Rafe are "in character" so far as main stream fanon goes (whatever that is!) but then when you're dealing with a theme such as this, and a three-some relationship to boot, well it's going to be a bit different! However, you definitely know you're reading about our guys. I really appreciated the format of the 'zine. The publishers put a really nice warning page before the story telling you what page the n/c sex begins and ends, in case you want to skip it. I didn't think this was at all skip worthy and you'll be missing about 23 pages of the story if you do. Sure I don't like Blair being forced into the situation, but it's not over-done and is certainly readable. The art-work by Geli is beautiful. The last piece is a b/w pencil of Jim, Blair and Rafe lying together in a sensual, naked tangle. Beautiful! This 'zine just flew by for me. I immediately read the sequel, and would welcome even more from this universe. This 'zine is complete and you don't have to read the sequel, though I think you'll want to! SQUICK WARNINGS: I have been in the fandom long enough to know that some things are really squicks for some, and I'm trying to pay more attention to them so I can be as fair to everyone as possible. f you can't get into Super!Blair Super!Rafe, i.e. lots of special features: super strength, advanced self-healing abilities, a special sexual pleasure button (hee), and the ability to genetically alter others to give them a longer life, then this may not be your cup of tea. But then, if the alien concept itself doesn't scare you away, this shouldn't faze you! You may also like to know Shorts has no fear of creating new careers for our guys, nor does Shorts mind at all if it's a gay, gay, gay world! :-) [1]
The first page is yellow and contains a warning about nonconsensual sex happening on certain pages. You can either skip the warning page or skip the pages in question (I did neither and squirmed through all the scenes, as they were hitting a lot of buttons. It made me stop and rant at the zine - in this case this is a good thing, btw! - very intense). The story itself is an AU where Sentinels are hunted down by an organisation of manlike mutants whose sole purpose is to destroy people with heightened senses. They had been incredibly successful in the past. But now another line of belief emerges: Sentinels should be observed from a distance and given a chance to live... A certain anthropologist tries to ensure that the Sentinel he found is safe, but has to admit he can't protect him - not even with the help of his fellow warrior, Rafe. On their escape Blair, Rafe and Jim share more than the bed with each other - and Blair introduces Jim to the ways of making love to FenFaer... But then the young anthropologist is captured and brought to FenFaer's headquarters where all of a sudden he is not only enslaved but also in the middle of a political uproar... [2]

I was a bit disappointed in Fenfaer by Shorts. I was looking forward to more Jim angst and all I got was Blair owies...ugh. I am sorry if I offend anyone but I have had it up to hear with the Blair owie stories, and if I read one more I may puke. Not to say that there isn't any good stories with Blair owies, but if that's all its about(plus the usual kidnap a guide, hurt a guide cliches) then I don't even want to bother. Fenfaer was good, but I was a bit disappointed. Plus, I am NOT a Rafe fan. How can there
be a fandom calling on a character who showed up maybe once in a Blue Moon, and said maybe a total of twelve words. And he's not even remotely cute.. [3]
