The Game of Thrones Finale, and the final season in general, elicited a strong reaction from fans, most of it negative.
Fan Petition
One fan created a petition, "Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers"[1] which received over 1.8 million signatures. Although, whether this was a legitimate request of the studio, or just a way for fans to show their unhappiness with the final season is unclear.[2]
Charity Fundraisers
After the finale the fans at the r/freefolk subreddit set up two charity fundraisers in response to Season 8 and to thank the lead actors of the series[3][4]

Reactions to the Plot
Never have I seen such brilliant directing, cinematography, acting, editing, music, sound editing and visual effects set to such bullshit writing.[5]

Reactions to Character Development
10 years of character development from all these characters to be thrown out the window. [8]
[Referencing Daenerys in episode 5] I'm so sad because I feel that despite everything that you have had to go through all the seasons, we will lose you in the next episode. In someway we lost you already. This was not who you really are[9]
Fans spent years literally YEARS making theories and analyzing prophecies and writing 100k word essays about the complex writing in Game of Thrones and the incredible foreshadowing and the insanely amazing characterization and tonight we watched Daenerys Targaryen’s arc betray her entire character while Jaime and Cersei Lannister were squished like two cockroaches.[10]
RIP not to Jaime Lannister, who lives on in our hearts, but to his character development[11]
