FLCL is also in this space where its very popular in the west, but not a big deal in Japan; it was part of the lineage of an extremely famous company, but at the end of its time; it was made while the internet was around, but before it was accessible. As such it was in that middle ground where a lot of rumor-type facts around it emerged to fill demand from western audiences, but the Japanese side of things wasn’t making the mountains of documentation on it that shows like Evangelion got, that you could easily port over. I was kind of shocked at how little this book was discussed in the west - you can find endless threads on every Evangelion interview book on the right forums, but I don’t think I found a single one when searching around.
