Eve is an MI5 security agent, investigating an international assassin, Villanelle. Both women are obsessed with one another, and the subtext of their relationship has increasing become text as the series has progressed.
Fandom
Eve/Villanelle are the most popular pairing within the Killing Eve fandom and their cat-and-mouse, enemies-to-lovers storyline arc, as well as their obsession for each other was the topic of much discussion and meta throughout the show's run. As of June 2024, on Archive of Our Own, the pairing have 3,895 works in their tag and were 22nd in Centreoftheselights' top 100 femslash ships on AO3 as of 2023.
Series Finale Criticism
The series finale was heavily criticised for what was seen to be the use of the Bury Your Gays trope when Villanelle was (presumably) killed off in the season finale, shortly after the relationship between Eve and Villanelle became canonical. This was particularly the case because Villanelle did not die in the the original book series that Killing Eve was based off of, leaving fans wondering why the change was necessary in the TV series.
