Reactions and Reviews
What I love about this story the most is the subdued strain of humor running through it. While its events are dramatic - Jim can't cope with Blair renouncing his life's work for his sake - Lanning also shows their humorous side. Her depiction of a drunken Jim is both hilarious and heartbreaking, however the reason for him attempting to drown his sorrows is certainly less than amusing. Lanning's characterizations are spot-on with her Jim guilt-ridden, generous and yet blind to the emotional repercussions of his actions, her Blair first subdued, then angry and furiously protective, and she takes the reader with her on a journey of discovery, seeking a resolution to the series' finale more faithful to the characters than the one we were presented with in canon. [1]
The thing I love about Lanning's stories is that she takes her time in telling them. There is no great rush to get to the end. Instead, she fully explores the stories she tells. Epiphanea is a gentle story told with great humor. She has a wonderful grasp of the characters and her plot is sublime. The story starts with a drunk Jim and proceeds from there. Why has Jim sought comfort in tequila? Why did he assault the Chief of Police? And what happens when Blair overhears part of Jim's confession? [2]
Set after "The Sentinel by Blair Sandburg", Jim gets drunk out of his gourd on tequila and the result is a very funny story, despite the fact that it deals with more serious issues as well... I'm not big on humour as a genre in fanfic as a rule - for some reason there's a lot of it out there that I don't find even the least amusing - but this is brilliant, probabaly because it's not straight 'humour'. I seem to prefer stories which have humourous elements within a more serious storyline. I love both Blair and Jim in this story and the original characters are wonderfully drawn as well. Lanning Cook is a terrific writer, another author I would follow to any fandom she wanted to write in. [3]
The oblig TS recs from some of the usual suspects, which you'll probably seeing a lot of: [...] Also, don't miss Epiphaneia by Lanning Cook, for another TSbyBS treat. I'll be giggling about Mr. Squiggles for a while yet....[4]
humourously drunken jim who talks to the worm in a bottle of tequila. if this story's not notorious in fandom it deserves to be. also, other cuteness and whatnot; some hard-to-define-ness seemed off to me, but was easily overlooked. maybe right around the resolution, the dialogue or the flow or something.
