Reactions and Reviews
'Endings' actually includes some poetry as well as the story, but in my view the story is much superior [to its prequel], and in any case the poems propose on the one hand that Spock carries on an affair with Kirk whilst still bonded to McCoy, which I find too out of character and dishonourable for Spock, and in another that they form a threesome, which is well past my Yuk Factor. In this avowedly A/U, McCoy has killed himself out of pain and jealousy, Spock has gone to Gol, but this time has succeeded in achieving the Kolinhar, and has been named a Master. An unhappy Jim Kirk, stuck in the Admiralty but wanting to be back in space, approaches Spock as Supplicant, but really he wants to beg Spock to come back by his side. Spock helps him see, through a meld, why that is no longer possible and that they must go their separate ways and not meet again. Spock has purged himself of all the painful memories and thoughts of what might have been, and adjusted to his new life (even to the point of having himself castrated—ouch!—but completely logical in context, as he tries to explain to an aghast Kirk) and he urges Kirk to find peace of mind and his life among the stars again. After an intense mental experience, like dying and rebirth, Kirk does find himself again and goes on his way alone. Terribly moving and poignant Try it. [1]
