Empire Reflections is a Kirk/Spock story by A.T. Bush.
It was published in the print zine First Time #7.
Summary
"M/U: Pike is dying, so he sets up Kirk to be the next captain of the Enterprise with Spock to support and advise him."
Excerpt
"Kirk strode briskly around the busy bridge collecting and correlating ship's reports while Captain Pike indolently lolled in the command chair his still injured leg elevated on a temporary stool. Kirk carefully avoided bumping the hazard. He was new to the ship and still on 'probation'."
Reactions and Reviews
I wonder if one, especially an officer of Kirk’s caliber, can be so naïve not to suspect any personal gain by the one giving those orders to destroy and punish. Pike choosing Kirk as his successor to the captaincy of the Enterprise is a welcome change of approach. Pike, no matter what he had to do is still portrayed as an honorable man and I got the idea that Kirk would be shown the same way. That’s why it was so disconcerting to read about the atrocities he had to do, not without exacting a price, I might add. For a moment I had the impression of seeing a different Kirk, a Kirk not altogether consistent with what the previous pages had shown and different from what would follow. Not a natural change as if the circumstances had left their mark on him and spurred him on to look at himself and what he had become, but rather as if there were two different Kirks involved. But it was the same one. Spock is Spock— reliable and trustworthy. [1]
