Edmond Dantès, also known as the Count of Monte Cristo, originated in the 1844 novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. He is a well-known cultural figure and has appeared in numerous retellings of the original story.
In the Gankutsuou anime, he remains a major character, but the story instead focuses on Albert de Morcerf, who is a minor character in the original novel.
