Dreams Within Dreams is a Kirk/Spock story by Cassla Williams.
It was first published in the print zine, Kontinuing Saga, and then reprinted in Beside Myself #2 with this note:
[My story "Dreams Within Dreams" is] a reprint from Kahntinuing Saga [sic]. I've reprinted it because very, very few fans actually got their copies of that zine, and those of you who did, read a non-edited version of this story. Enough said. [1]
Summary
"After Kirk and Spockʼs minds are unintentionally invaded by aliens, the after-effects are dreams of each other as their buried desires are given life."
Reactions and Reviews
1988
DREAMS WITHIN DREAMS had quite a bit of potential. The story is nice, Kirk and McCoy are both having strange dreams about Spock that lead Kirk and Spock to admitting their feelings for each other. However, this reads like a first draft of the story. I think it's pretty sad when a story reads badly because the editor didn't take time to polish the roughness out of it, which wouldn't have taken much effort in this case. [2]
1990
Never are we quite certain where dream ends and reality begins but they make for some interesting scenarios. In this case, the Enterprise triage gets a little help from an alien influence allowing each to test his feelings under the comforting cover of unreality. Funny what comes when you think you're talking to yourself. [3]
1991
I really liked how this concept was handled. It is believable that Kirk would remember Rayna in a dream because that's on the unconscious level, and Spock only blocked Kirk's conscious memory of her. That was a nice touch. And the mind-bending ending was lovely. It could be interpreted in several interesting ways. [4]
