Dreaming Goddess (ゆめみる女神, Yumemiru Megami) is a Yuri!!! on Ice doujinshi by Pinthiku. It is sometimes informally referred to as the Toilet Doujinshi.[1][2]

It caused controversy primarily in Western fandom due to its graphic content and violent themes including gang rape, dismemberment, and brainwashing. It has been translated into several languages by scanlation groups, including English and Spanish.

Background

Dreaming Goddess (ゆめみる女神) is a 42 page derivative work that was first sold by the circle Pinthiku (ぴんちく, Pinchiku), which includes the artist Terere (てれれ, Terere), on 10 September 2017 at the fandom event Hyousou Strastʹ 5 (氷奏ストラースチ5, Hyousou sutorāsuchi go), a Yuri!!! on Ice-exclusive fandom gathering held in Tokyo, Japan. The event is mostly dedicated to fans of the show selling fan works, such as comics. Many of the fan comics sold here are meant for mature audiences.

In late October 2017, Dreaming Goddess was translated into English by an unknown scanlation group, presumably without permission from Pinthiku nor Terere. The translation was then uploaded to MyReadingManga, a popular website for reading free doujinshi. The site offers over two hundred Yuri!!! on Ice doujins alone for fans to read and discuss within the comments. Dreaming Goddess was uploaded onto the site in late October and received mass criticism from fans. In the doujin, Victor Nikiforov, a fan-favorite character is viciously tortured, raped and mutilated by an unnamed kidnapper. The response was largely negative; many fans believed it was disturbing and horrifying to read. Various individuals also rallied together in an attempt to have the manga removed from MyReadingManga.

The manga soon went viral, with fans linking and discussing the doujin on Tumblr and Twitter. Several posts were created asking people not to read the manga if they are easily triggered or disturbed. Despite this, many fans the read doujin anyway out of sheer curiosity to find out why it was so controversial.

One Russian fan, under the pseud RENJOU7, linked the doujinshi to Mitsurou Kubo, the co-writer of Yuri!!! on Ice, in hopes that Kubo would sue the artist for her usage of YOI's characters.[3][4] Kubo did not inevitability reply, and it is unknown if she even saw the message. However, the tweet itself gained controversy, some criticizing the move as bringing unwanted exposure to fanworks and their legality. Others believing that harassing YOI's creator was wrong and immoral. The tweet has since been deleted.

The artist, Terere, was believed to have been contacted on Twitter and sent hate messages by fans. Her doujinshi was uploaded to MyReadingManga, without her prior permission, and so the artist contacted the website asking for it to be removed. MyReadingManga obliged and the doujinshi was taken down. Additionally, it was also removed from other websites, notably MangaGo, likely as a result of the artist's involvement.

On October 27, the artist Terere publically apologized on her Twitter for the contents of the doujinshi:

I'm sorry I have become your reply at once. I am sorry this time for causing trouble with my doujinshi "Yumemiru Megami". This doujinshi does not allow reprinting anywhere. And, thank you very much for your many messages. I am reading it all. I am very happy. Sorry I'm not good at English, it's a weird sentence[5]

The tweet gained over 100 responses, most of which are from fans apologizing on behalf of the fandom's actions. Terere described the intense reaction as a "shock" but is grateful to those who supported and liked her artwork.[6]
