Douglas Adams was an English author, screenwriter, and playwright who was known for his science fiction and comedy work.
He remains best known, within fandom and without, for writing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He also wrote the Dirk Gently books, which received some renewed fan interest in 2016 when it was adapted for television by the BBC.
Between 1979 and 1980, he was writer and script editor for Doctor Who.
Relationship with fandom and the internet
He was one the first industry professionals to reach out to fans via the internet. He was a early champion of online communications and devoted Mac user. In 1999 he created the website h2g2, which started as a real life version of his fictional Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, making it one of the first online encyclopedia websites.
