He remains best known, within fandom and without, for writing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He also wrote the Dirk Gently books, which received some renewed fan interest in 2016 when it was adapted for television by the BBC.

Relationship with fandom and the internet

He was one the first industry professionals to reach out to fans via the internet. He was a early champion of online communications and devoted Mac user. In 1999 he created the website h2g2, which started as a real life version of his fictional Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, making it one of the first online encyclopedia websites.
