Double Agent Vader is a series of Star Wars fanfiction by Fialleril.
It is an alternate universe fic series where Darth Vader turns against the Empire and Darth Sidious, and instead acts as a spy for the Rebellion. The series is made up primarily of one-shots exploring Vader/Anakin's journey and his relationships with others, particularly a droid OC named KD-7 and Leia Organa.
The series is particularly well-known for its development of Tatooine slave culture, including the original language Amatakka.
Tattooine Slave Culture =
Amatakka Language
Amatakka is the language of the slaves from Tattooine, also known as Amavikka. The language has a community dictionary with several hundred words and a phoneme dictionary.
The headcanon I ultimately settled on is that Amatakka is most closely related to the Tusken language(s), and that the Tuskens are a human people group indigenous to Tatooine and most of Tatooine’s human slaves are descended from people originally stolen from Tusken tribes.
Storytelling
The stories told throughout Double Agent Vader about Ekkreth and Tattooine Slave Culture aren't about Ekkreth as a slave but Ekkreth becoming free which parallels Vader/Anakin as "Ekkreth", the Rebel:
Vader remembered asking his mother once why there were so many stories about Ekkreth as a slave. She’d looked at him very seriously and said, “Oh no, Ani. They aren’t stories about Ekkreth the slave at all. They’re stories of how Ekkreth becomes free. Depur has a thousand cruelties, but Ekkreth has a hundred thousand tricksShape Changer by Fialleril
These stories had an impact on many fans
Reading Double Agent Vader the first time (it was one of the first Star Wars fics I ever read), I was instantly enamored with the Ekkreth stories. I wanted to read them, understand them, write themhttps://www.tumblr.com/adragonsfriend/737671288661917696/on-writing-amavikka-stories
In their guide to writing Amavikka stories, adragonsfriend also states the key point regarding these stores "[they] are not historical tales meant to accurately recount a true event [...] They're not novels, meant to entertain [...] They're not comedies, meant to make you laugh [...] Ekkreth stories have messages for the Amavikkan people who are telling them and listening to them and creating them".
Fan Reactions
saltkettle writes: The author has built an entire folkloric history for the Tatooine Slaves. This is a series of one shots that explores Darth Vader as Anakin who remembers what it is to be a slave, and more importantly, how a slave resists.
Blythe writes: I like Anakin way more than I should, so having him secretly be a good guy makes me happy. Also, dramatic irony![1]
