Dolls, in internet context, refer to small images created pixel-by-pixel usually by adding onto a "base" image. Usually dolls were human or humanoid (e.g. elves) but could also be other things such as centaurs or mermaids. Dolls could also be created through a scripted drag-and-drop webpage or flash app, for those who didn't have the ability to create their own.
Dolls were popular in the 2000s, and could be used to show off original characters, or could be a form of fanart when made to resemble a character from media. Common activities included "adopting" dolls from another fan, which entailed uploading the image to the adopter's webspace and linking back to that doll's creator.
