Doctor on the Squad is a 26-page Bodie/Doyle story by Jane of Australia.

"Blue Jeans And True Genes, or... Cupid Was A Welsh Doctor, or... The Courting of Raymond Doyle, or..."

This story was originally part of the paper circuit. It is crossover with The British TV series, Doctor in the House, a show in which Martin Shaw had a role.

Reactions and Reviews

1990

Another favorite of mine is Doctor on the Squad. Doyle's cousin Hugh (Huw?) -- based on a character Shaw portrayed in the series "Doctor in the House." -- joins CI5 Medical and his advice to a frustrated Bodie is to "court" Doyle." Bodie does and it works! I can see Bodie leaving a rose tied to the steering wheel of Ray's car, slipping love poetry to Doyle, taking him out to fancy restaurants for wining and dining and seducing. As for Bodie writing poetry... possibly. Some of history's great soldiers have also written poems and sonnets... If anything, I can see Bodie indulging in Haiku for its discipline. [1]

I like "twists" such as DOCTOR ON THE SQUAD in which Bodie is convinced he should "court" Doyle. All done with humor and a touch of pathos. In all, quite romantic. I occasionally forgive even drek if it's romantic (SQUAD is not drek!) [2]

1992

Doyle is on holiday in Paris. Bodie, who has been injured (but not seriously) goes to see the new squad medic, a Welshman called Huw Evans. Huw is not only the spitting image of Doyle but also a distant relation of his. Being bi-sexual, he flirts with Bodie who i$ also bi and fancies Ray, but doesn't think he stands a chance of getting him. When Huw and Bodie get together sexually, Bodie realises that he doesn't just lust after Ray but loves him, and he decides to woo him on his return. Ray decides that Bodie's obvious attempts at seduction are on account of a bet by Murphy and Jax,% and he lets Bodie kiss him. Tho' he enjoys it he refuses to go further, as years before he tried male/male sex but just ended up feeling used and sore. Bodie announces that he will court Ray. When the latter finds out that Huw fancies Bodie he worries that if he rejects him Bodie will go to Huw - and that idea doesn't sit well at all. So true love wins out in the end.

I think the Huw character in this story is based on a character Shaw played in a comedy series, but never having seen the show I can't say for sure. I quite liked the idea of Bodie courting Ray -- it was an unusual angle to the tale - but I'm not at all sure he'd write poetry to do it! There was a great sex/love scene included, tho' the author did forget to have Bodie remove his trousers - or even open them! I also liked the fact that Huw got together with Murphy.

A good read. [3]

This story has long been a favourite of mine. I like the idea of Bodie courting Doyle, even if he has to be kick-started by Doyle's cousin, Huw Evans.

And a thorough courting it is, too - meals, poems, roses, the lot! Doyle's fears and insecurities are seduced away by this undiscovered side of Bodie to the mutual satisfaction and happiness of both. [4]

1993

Bodie is the seducer, and what little suffering there is is shared. Top/Bottom? I don't remember, but Doyle repeats about 10 times that *last* time he did it, he got sore, a pulled groin, and pissed off, so we know he wasn't a virgin. [5]

2000

I have no idea who wrote this. It was passed to me by a friend who was clearing out her collections of Pros short stories and is so delightful that I could not leave it out of any personal 'best of" story list. On his return from a holiday in Paris, Doyle is astounded to learn that he has a double at CI5 - the new squad doctor in the shape of his cousin, Huw Evans. (Huw was played by MS in the series Doctor in the House.) Meanwhile, Bodie has just begun to realise how much he missed his partner while he was away and when the offer comes from Huw,, believing that Doyle is unattainable, accepts the next best thing. When he realises that Huw is fun but it's not him that he loves, he sets out to court Doyle. Roses and candle lit suppers. In fact, the works. Meanwhile, Murphy has his eyes on a certain Welsh doctor. This is a lovely fun look at CI5 which I would recommend to anyone. [6]
