Brave is a 2012 animated film produced by Pixar.
Canon
Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film tells the story of a princess named Merida who defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire to not be betrothed. After consulting a witch for help, Merida accidentally transforms her mother into a bear and is forced to undo the spell herself before it is too late.[1]

Pairings
Merida is most often involved in crossover pairings, usually with other Disney characters or characters from other animated films (see The Big Four below). In universe she is rarely paired with one of her suitors from the film (ex. Young Macintosh). It is also not unusual to find gen fanworks that focused on family dynamics, these usually have Elinor/Fergus as a background pairing.

A popular crossover known as The Big Four, which crossovers Rapunzel (from Tangled), Jack Frost (from Rise of the Guardians), Merida (from Brave), and Hiccup (from How to Train Your Dragon) together.
Conspiracy Theories
A popular theory behind Brave is that it and Disney's Wreck-it Ralph were 'swapped', due to Brave being something traditionally handled by classic Disney, and Wreck-it Ralph better suiting Pixar's ethos of 'what if [insert subject here] had feelings?'
While 'What if Scotland had feelings?' is at least applicable, it doesn't fit in nearly as well as most of Pixar's other works, which reinforces the theory. Speculation could infer that the two companies had a wager, to see which could do a better job by exchanging their works.
Critically speaking, fans generally like Wreck-it Ralph more than Brave.
