Defense Squad is a term which seems to have come into use in fandom in 2014 with Tyler Posey Defense Squad and Ron Weasley Defence Squad being early examples and growing more common in 2016 with examples such as Padme Amidala Defence Squad. "Defense squads" are fans who make posts, meta, and fanworks in defense of characters who may be bashed by other fans.
This differs from the protection squad, which exists primarily with canon characters in fanart who are interpreted by fans as being protective of a popular character (often a smol bean or little meow meow).
