This is a new story idea, I got a little impatient waiting for them to get together, but a little anticipation is good for the soul, I especially liked Kirk teaching Spock how to kiss. [1]
As part of his diplomatic duties, Spock performs a sensuous "most traditional" dance on stage. Unbeknown to him, Kirk is first prize!
Lots of fun as a hapless Spock is ushered into a luxurious hotel room by a gaggle of showgirls and forced into a bubble bath with Kirk. But Kirk believes "when in Rome..." and cajoles Spock into bed for "Just one more demonstration of affection" so that they don't offend their hosts. I just love this scenario—where a society demands that Kirk and Spock have sex or the people will be so upset. "'Vulcans do not kiss!' Spock hissed. 'They view it as a scientific experiment,' Kirk said, 'if it will make you happy.'"
Some of my favorite lines in this fun story are when Spock says: "'Can humans think of nothing else?' " and when he defends his drop-dead sexy dance by telling Kirk that it's "'taught at school age to promote balance and suppleness'". Yeah. Right. I should be so flexible.
Talk about a virginal Spock! He says: " 'As you have observed, I do not know how to kiss'"! Of course, private tutorial kissing lessons are in order. There's a lovely moment as Spock, consumed with guilt, beams away as Kirk proclaims his love. And a terrific moment (that I won't give away) where Kirk tries to keep those pesky girls from opening the bathroom door.
I love what Spock says to Kirk: " 'Jim, I cannot put into words how I feel about you. I must endeavor to show you.' " And I adored the description of Spock's chest as "sensuously hirsute".
Really a delightful and lively story[2]
I like stories like this where Kirk and Spock, nowhere near to acknowledging their desire for each other, are forced into an intimate situation. I felt it unlikely from the start, though, that Spock would be doing this dance in public, but it was explained later. On this planet with a hedonistic culture, he was basically coerced, could not diplomatically refuse. Nor could he and Kirk diplomatically refuse their being together ostensibly as lovers for the night. They were not alone, had to put on an act for the attendants present. Poor Kirk, asking a little later, was it so bad to have to kiss me? Of course Spock cannot say why he's really so uncomfortable. So they end up hurting each other, withdrawing, each sure the other doesn't have those kinds of feelings. A wonderful scene in the morning though! A nice surprise I won't say. This is a totally virginal Spock. but he's a good dancer, after all, and is a quick study at sex. Nice. [3]
