Their canon relationship started when Damon returned home from war while Katherine was visiting the Salvatores. She had an affair with him and he was aware of her vampire nature. For over 100 years, he thought she was locked in a tomb in Mystic Falls and he was willing to do anything to get her out. Once he learned of her deception, his devotion turned to hatered.
