Damon/Caroline is a minor, controversial pairing in The Vampire Diaries fandom.
Canon
Caroline meets Damon in season one and he compels her, to use her to get closer to Elena. He uses her for sex and as a source of blood, using compulsion to get rid of any resistance. After she became a vampire, she hated Damon for all that he did to her, but they managed to develop enough of a relationship to continue to work together towards common goals.
Fandom
The ship of Damon/Caroline remains a controversial amongst the fandom as a lot of fans consider the season one relationship as non-consensual, saying Damon raped Caroline[1]. A lot of the fans consider their past relationship as abusive and portray it as such in fanworks. A lot of fans also comment on Caroline's canon dislike and open hate for Damon[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] while others can't understand why she can't just move on.
After episode 6x15, where Damon gave eulogy for Liz Forbes, there have been an uptake in positive portrayals of the pairing.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
- Abusive/toxic relationship - Damon/Caroline is sometimes used as a past relationship in Caroline ships (such as Klaroline), less often in Damon pairings. Even in fics where Damon isn't shown as a bad guy, their relationship is far from perfect.
