Dagbert Endless, also known as Dagbert the Drowner, is a character who appears in the last three books in the Children of the Red King series and is popular in its fandom.
In Canon
Dagbert is the son of Lord Grimwald and a mermaid, cursed, like every firstborn son in the Grimwald family, to kill or be killed by his father while in his thirteenth year. He arrives at Bloor's Academy after allegedly drowning a classmate at Loth's and is tasked by the Bloors with alienating Charlie from his friends. He exhibits variously rude, cruel, and eccentric behavior and attempts to drown good characters on many occasions. However, it is revealed that his personality is tied to the phases of the moon and that he does not necessarily want to be cruel. He becomes enemies with Tancred Torsson in Book Six after Tancred steals one of his sea-gold charms, which stop his fits and were intended by his late mother to help him survive his father. In Book Seven, Dagbert drowns Tancred in the art room. Tancred is secretly revived by the Flames. In Book Eight, when Grimwald arrives at the Academy, Dagbert begs for Charlie's help but is initially rejected. When Dagbert confronts and tries to kill his father, Charlie goes with him, but they are overwhelmed and nearly killed. Lysander arrives and his spirits force Grimwald into the Sea-Globe, apparently killing him despite the curse. After this, Dagbert stops having his mood swings and appears more normal. He takes part in the final battle on the side of good, after which he is adopted by Katya Kettle.
In Fandom
Dagbert's tidal personality is often interpreted as a mood disorder and compared to BPD. He is sometimes headcanoned as autistic.
Much fandom discourse revolves around the apparent plot hole death of Lord Grimwald and Dagbert's subsequent personality change and redemption arc, which fans tend to feel was poorly done.
In earlier days of the fandom, Dagbert was most likely to be shipped in fic with one of the Branko sisters or with Emma Tolly. He was also sometimes shipped with Joshua Tilpin, based on their short-lived close friendship when both belong to the evil endowed group. Mentions of WaterPainitng (Charlie/Dagbert) date to a few months after Dagbert's introduction, but no fic was tagged for the pairing until 2023. It is currently the most written ship for either character on Ao3, followed by Tancbert (Dagbert/Tancred), a ship with mixed reception in the fandom: the oldest fic featuring it seemed unironic, but it took on a status as a humorously cursed ship, then became seen as tame after the Ancient Cat Yaoi discourse. Stemming from warmer feelings toward Tancbert and from the ever-popular StormSpirit (Lysander/Tancred) and ThunderBird (Emma/Tancred) are the poly ships TancLyBert and TancEmBert. Dagbert is occasionally shipped with Naren Bloor.
In fan art, he is sometimes depicted as looking less human than in canon, having greener skin or hair and scales or other attributes denoting his half-mermaid heritage. Many fan works make mention of his line, "I am Dagbert Endless. My names are as endless as the ocean, and I drown people."
A common genre of Dagbert-centric fics is post canon redemption arc fix-its.
