Cosette, birth name Euphrasie, also known as Cosette Fauchelevent, and finally as Cosette Pontmercy, is a character in Les Misérables. She is the daughter of Fantine and Félix Tholomyès, and the adoptive daughter of Jean Valjean. She falls in love with and eventually marries Marius Pontmercy.

Canon

Cosette is the daughter of Fantine and the adoptive daughter of Jean Valjean. Her journey from an abuse survivor at the hands of the the Thénardiers to a respectable young woman and the wife of Marius Pontmercy, as well as her relationship with her adoptive father, is an important aspect of the second half of the novel.

Common Pairings

The canonical ship Cosette Fauchelevent/Marius Pontmercy, or Marisette, is the fandom's biggest het ship. During earlier decades of the musical fandom, there was a ship war between Marisette and Marius Pontmercy/Éponine Thénadier where the latter was somewhat more popular, but with the fandom's shift towards a bigger focus on slash than het after the 2012 movie, Marius Pontmercy/Éponine Thénadier lost prominence. Indeed, the second most common Cosette ship is Cosette/Éponine Thénardier, or Eposette, the most popular femslash ship in the fandom. This ship is likely also partially a response to the past ship war.

Fanon

  • Siblings Cosette and Enjolras (AO3 tag).
  • In the summer of 2020, a discussion blossomed on Tumblr about Cosette (and to a lesser extent Marius Pontmercy) being a goth, leading to both meta and fanart.[1] This interpretation was noted as being unintuitive to the fandom's norms, making it a bit of a subversion of the usual fanon about Cosette.[2]
